Hello my dear followers and visitors

I have not disappeared.

I apologize for the lack of reviews and comments for the past month.

It is shameful to say that I haven’t read a book since my last review. University started once again and I haven’t been able to manage my time with leisure reading, studying, working, household chores, family, and friends. CHAOS!

I am jealous of all of you who actually have time for reading!!

Anyways, at this rate I won’t be reading until my final exams are over in December.

No, never mind, I promise a review of Allegiant when it comes out. 🙂

I like to say thank you to those blogs that still follow me and that one occasional visitor that views my blog.

Love, Maryana

P.S. This blog is a work in process, which is currently on pause . Will resume as soon as possible 🙂

The Liebster Award

ImageYesterday, I’ve been nominated for Liebster-award by Classy Cat Books. This is very exciting because this is the first nomination I’ve got. I am very happy and honored to be considered for this.

This is one of my first book review unrelated posts. I never know what to write about or how to participate in those daily blogger challenges. But I hope I’ll be able to do that soon.

So according to Classy Cat Books there are some rules that I must follow in this post.

First, I need to thank the person who nominated me and link back to their blog.

Second, I must post 11 facts about myself, answer 11 questions asked by the presenter, and nominate 11 of my own blogs.

Finally, I must display the Liabster Award logo.

This is very simple so I hope I do this properly.

11 Facts about me

  1. I am definitely not a writer. Although I write better than I speak sometimes. But mostly I write the way I speak. I do want to write a novel someday. I have so many ideas.
  2. I love languages. I only speak English, Russian, and Ukrainian but I am learning French right now. After I finish with French, I want to learn Spanish, Italian, German, Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, etc. I doubt that I’ll manage all of this but who knows.
  3. I never leave a book unfinished. Even if I hate it and have no interest in reading it, I will still force myself to finish it. I feel like all books are special and they deserve to be respected. You cannot just judge a book by a few pages. Sometimes I have a certain opinion at the start of a book which changes completely by the end. It is not just to criticize a book if you haven’t read it fully. Sorry if I am being very critical, I mean no harm though. I understand how sometimes people just do not get into books or they are written poorly that you cannot read it anymore.
  4. I did not expect to actually enjoy blogging. I started my blog because obviously I love books and I would always love to talk about books with my friend. Everyone in my high school used to love reading so I have always had someone to talk to but since we graduated, everything changed. I am the only one who is still dedicated to reading while most of my friends stopped and had no interest in listening to me. Thus I started my blog so I can actually talk to people who like reading. I did not think that I would enjoy writing reviews because I am not a writer but this is fun.
  5. Coca-Cola is my only vice. I am seriously addicted to it. I drink coke almost every day. I don’t smoke, do drugs, or drink too much alcohol. I just drink coke 😛
  6. I have a cat. I honestly do not know what breed he is but he has white fur and green eyes. His name is Dollar because I got him for one dollar 😛 He is very lazy but when he is active, he can be evil. He sometimes reminds me of a dog (he chases his tail, and sticks out his tongue) also he reminds of a horse when he runs.
  7. I either love to be a social butterfly or a loner. I love going out, meeting new people, dancing, drinking, and having fun. But sometime I just want to live in a cabin in the woods, with no electricity, just candle light and thousands of books. I am sure we all feel like this.
  8. I do not tan, I just burn. There has been very nice weather recently. Yesterday I went to the beach. I stayed there for 3 hours and I was so happy because I thought I did not get burned but then I went out to dinner with my friends and I turned red as a tomato. I had to run out of the restaurant to the closest drug store so that I could buy after sun soothing lotion. I was very itchy and in pain. So today, I cannot go anywhere because I do not want to risk more sun exposure. White skin problems.
  9. I want to open a publishing company. I do not know when this will happen but I really hope it does. If I were to open a publishing company then my books would include a hard copy and PDF like some textbooks do. I am sure other publishing companies will start doing this soon. I carry my books everywhere and I know that ereaders make this simpler but I want the best of both worlds.
  10. Let’s talk Harry Potter. I would be in Slytherin. I always wanted Harry and Hermione to be together. (Don’t hate). I never cry in movies, but Harry Potter is one of the only once I did. I waited 12 hours outside the theater to see Deathly Hallows Part 2. On Wednesday, me and my friend went to see the Sorcerer’s Stone in theater because they are replaying all the films this summer. I do own them all on DVD and Blu-ray but it is just nice to do see it on the big screen. This is the second time we’re doing this.
  11. I am paranoid about technology. It freaks me out to think that you are on a camera most of the time. I hate how much technology controls our lives to the point where we cannot survive without it. I feel like freedom is not going to last and with all this technology it is so easy to control people. As I said, I am paranoid.

Question time

What is your favorite book genre?

I mostly read fiction. Fantasy especially. I used to love post-apocalyptic novels but now they all sound the same to me. I still read them though.

What is your favorite cereal?

I am not a morning person. I usually sleep through breakfast so I don’t usually eat breakfast food such as cereal. If I had to choose though, I would say Kellogg Krave. I am not a healthy person 😛

Why did you choose the topic you did for your blog?

Honestly, my blog is still a work in progress. I am not a huge fan of my name or the layout of my blog. I plan on changing it when I can think of something creative. I do have a layout planned out for my blog. I just need someone to help me create it.

What was(/is) your favorite subject in high school?

It changed from year to year. Usually it is the one I got the highest grade in 😛 So in grade 9 I would have said Art. Grade 10- leadership. Grade 11- History. Grade 12- English.

What is your favorite TV Show?

Now this is a tough one. My all-time favorite TV shows are Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Charmed. Now i love watching True Blood and The Walking Dead.

What is your favorite word and why?

I don’t have a favorite word, does anyone? Some words are pretty fascinating but they usually come from another language. Nothing comes to my mind right now.

What type of animal do you most identify with?

I love Lions. They are related to cats. They are super lazy at times but at the same time powerful. I envy them. But others would say that I am probably a monkey; crazy, silly, and weird.

Choose an adjective/adverb that starts with the same letter as your first name and also describes you.

Mischievous, modest, motivated, marvelous. I am all of those.

What’s your favorite Disney movie and/or song from a Disney movie?

The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast.

What type of music do you listen to?

Anything, it all depends on the mood I am in. I love Eminem, Rihanna, Muse, Linking Park, Marina and the Diamonds, Iggy Azalea, Justin Timberlake, Jem, …. And the list goes on.

How many words can you make from the letters in ‘Classy Cat’?

Ugh, I am terrible at this!!! Okay, there is class….ass….salsa….cast….say…at…a…. I am going to stop now.

I really do not know how to nominate people and I do not think I follow 11 blogs with under 200 followers. If I could I would just nominate all the people I follow and all the people that follow me.

Okay, so I hope I did this right and once again big thanks to Classy Cat Books.

Sorry if i have any spelling and grammar mistakes.

Xoxo, Maryana

A Game of thrones, not what I expected

ImageI had no intentions of reading this book because I had already watched the show and read some awful and praising reviews. I bought the boxed set at a sale at Wal-Mart and just thought that someday, possibly in the next decade, I might read it. Without even looking at it, I confined it to my shelf.

After I finished reading Elixir by Hilary Duff, I planned on reading Jane Eyre. Which I did, but I only read four chapters before I got extremely bored and irritated with the characters and the writing.

So I went to my book shelves, scanning for something new to read. That’s when I decided to give game of thrones a chance.

The prologue did not capture my attention at all. I was confused, I had no clue who the characters were or what they were talking about and right away they were dead. I remembered this scene from the show, that’s why I understood what happened. I thought the whole book would be dull but after reading the first two chapters I was hooked.

I read some reviews that say the first 100 pages of the book are boring and uneventful but I disagree. I loved reading about the characters daily lives before their whole world was turned around, even though (I agree) it was uneventful. My favorites are definitely Bram Stark, Jon Snow, and Daenerys Stormborn. I wish that Daenerys had more chapters, I love her story, but at some point the book goes through 100 pages of not including her. Instead, most chapters are focused on Ned Stark. It’s disappointing that he dies since we get to know his character so well. I rather have wanted to know more of other living characters than the ones that are killed off. I heard somewhere that Daenerys is not even in the third book and they had to write her in for viewer purposes in the show. If that’s the case, It’s going to take me a long time getting through the third book.

While watching the show, I’m going to be honest, I had no idea what was going on at some points. Reading the book helps you understand the show better. I find myself saying “ohh now I get it, or ohh that was him” after reading the book. It clears stuff up nicely. It is true what they say, the show follows the book pretty well. I did not notice any differences but that might be because I watched the first season of the show when it came out.

I should also mention that even though the book cleans stuff up, it does not mean that you will understand everything that’s happening. After reading the book, there are still some parts I did not understand fully but that is normal. And yes, there are some extremely boring parts but who am I to judge boring. Everyone defines boring in their own way. I found it kind of boring when they were discussing some lords and kings from far away and that do not even appear in the book. I’m sure though that they are significant for some external reason.

Surprisingly, the book was an easy to read. I thought that it might be difficult to follow but it is not. The hard part about the book, is trying to remember who’s who, and who is on whose side. It is difficult because some minor characters might share the same name.

Overall I rate this book 5/5 and the writing 5/5.

I don’t care what others say, I loved it and I would definitely recommend it to others.

P.S. sorry that I took a while reading it. I decided that it was a good idea to take summer courses and I was stuck studying for midterms for the past week. I’m free for the next little while before I have my finales. More reviews coming soon 🙂

True (Elixir #3) by Hilary Duff

What can I say about this book?TRUE-HILARY-DUFF

One of the quickest reads ever, it is like reading a children’s book.

The writing is very simple, the story doesn’t fully develop in my opinion and the whole book is too rushed.

The only reason I read this book is because I read the first two beforehand and desired to see how Hilary Duff would conclude her trilogy. The first book was the best one out of all three even though it did remind me of Evermore by Alyson Noel. Both of the books share the same concept of eternal love, reincarnation, and elixir of life. I do have to admit that I enjoyed evermore more than I enjoyed reading elixir (the first book by Hilary Duff).

I thought reading this book was a waste of time and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book to read (Unless you are of the age of twelve).

I do not want to trash this book because I do admire Hilary Duff and I do think she should write books but I think she should try writing children’s books.

One thing that stands out for me about this series, are the book covers. I love each one of them.

I give this book 2/5 just because I think the story is good but she could have developed and done so much more with it.

I give the writing 2/5 as well because of its simplicity.

If you disagree with me, just let me know. And that goes for all the reviews I write.

I’m not the best writer either, and this is a new hobby i’m picking up, so I apologize if i do not make sense sometimes. For sure Hilary writes better than i do right now. 😛

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

First Review!!!

Anna Karenina

Anna Karenina takes you back to nineteenth century Russia. It introduces the readers to the upper class lifestyle but also mentions the peasants living at that time. One can easily imagine themselves living and interacting with the character. In the novel, Leo Tolstoy illustrates the political, religious, and philosophical themes that were debated at the time. Some say that his views are specifically described through the character of Levin.

I do not particularly understand why Tolstoy chose the name of Anna Karenina for this novel since she is only one of the main characters. I would say Levin is as big of a character as she is plus there are many more major characters such as Vronsky, Oblonsky, etc. I think though that Tolstoy dedicated the book to her name because of the ending and because she is kind of the center of all events to the book. I guess I just answered my own question.

Anyways, writing a review is harder than I thought it would be. It took me almost two months’ time to finish reading this book. I enjoyed it for the most part but at some points it was extremely dull. It is hard to follow when Tolstoy penetrates on the political issues of the time even though it was well described and written. Those parts were not that interesting to me but it depends on the reader because some might find those long chapters the best ones in the book. What really stood out to me about the book is how Tolstoy illustrates the characters and the surrounding and the way the characters develop. Tolstoy illustrates the characters so well that you understand why they do the things they do. Even though Anna’s death is devastating, Tolstoy portrays it in a way that I could understand why she did it.

I did not fully understand some parts and cannot fully appreciate this book to its full extent. I think I am going to re-read this book in ten years and understand it better because currently I am new to this kind of literature.

I love the way the book is written even though I only read the translation and I wish I could have read it in Russian.

I think this is one of those books that one must read in their life time. I wouldn’t consider it a waste of time even though it will take a while to read.

I don’t even know how I should rate this book.

I give the writing 5/5

Story 4/5 because of those some dull parts

Well my first review was not so great. I don’t know what i should write about or not. I hope ill get better at this 🙂

With love, Maryana

Introducing myself

Hi everyone!

I enjoy reading and i decided to create a blog about it. Here i’ll be posting my book reviews, pictures and quotes. Just like any other book blog. But, hold on, i do not read any specific types of books, i read anything that i can get my hands on. Thus this blog will include recently released book reviews, classic books reviews, biographies, etc.

I am not the best writer, English is my second language, so excuse any grammar mistakes.

On average, i read fifty books a year. Ill try to review all the books i own but that will take some time.

For now, if anyone reads this blog and wants me to review a book, please let me know.

Currently, I am reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and i will be posting a review when i finish it.

Anyways, thank you for reading, and Ill do my best to take care of this blog.

P.S I’ll write reviews that wont take you an hour to read 😛
